The origins of a name<\/p>\n

Vento Mareiro is far more than just a few words, murmured amid vines. It\u2019s a timeless concept that sums up our family identity, with the caress of Val do Saln\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

When Pepito Dur\u00e1n, Roque\u2019s father, and the poet Ram\u00f3n Cabanillas bumped into one another in the streets of Cambados, they would hail each other with the expressive words \u201c\u00a1Qu\u00e9 vento mareiro vai!\u201d (\u201cWhat a blustery sea wind!\u201d)<\/em>. It was Ram\u00f3n Cabanillas\u2013the great Galician poet from Cambados who modernized Galician poetry\u2013who introduced the expression \u201cVento Mareiro\u201d (sea wind), used in the Saln\u00e9s and R\u00eda de Arousa areas, to the language shared by all Galicians. He used it for the title of one of the most emblematic books in Galician poetry and culture, \u201cVento Mareiro\u201d (Havana, 1915).<\/p>\n

This is the dedication to the 1st edition of Vento Mareiro: \u201cA ti, me Cambados, prob\u00e9 e fiadlo e so\u00f1ador que, \u00f3 cantareiro son dos pinales i \u00f3 agarimo dos teus pazos lexendarios, dormes deitado \u00f3 sol, a ver\u00eda do mar\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

Early 20th century – 1980<\/h3>\n

This story could begin in the old Sisan wine press, where the maternal great-grandparents made wine and in the Dur\u00e1n family’s assembly house, opposite Santa Mari\u00f1a Church in Cambados. They were seafaring people and, from the late 19th century, the owners of land and an inn. In the early 20th century, they were the first to fish for sardines, using purse-seine methods, selling them fresh and to the canning factories. And in the 1920s, Roque\u2019s parents were the first to employ their sailors officially and to pay
their national insurance.<\/p>\n

In the 1950s, Pepito Dur\u00e1n married Carmen Mart\u00ednez, the daughter of livestock traders based in San Marti\u00f1o de Meis and the farmers of land with vineyards. In the 1960s, they opened an inn in Cambados, with a small winery where they sold their Espadeiro wine and a little Albari\u00f1o. In the 1970s, the family began to take part in the \u201cAlbari\u00f1o Festival\u201d, although they mainly concentrated on fishing through to the 1980s.<\/p>\n

1980 – 2000<\/h3>\n

In the 1980s, Roque started studying at university and, at the same time, he began to modernize his parents\u2019 artisanal Albari\u00f1o winemaking process. He participated in the creation of the R\u00edas Baixas designation of origin and in the agricultural and wine-producing revolution that Saln\u00e9s underwent during the period.<\/p>\n

Having graduated in journalism and sales management, he started to work as a journalist for TVE in Galicia. He also laid the foundations of his business and, in 1989, he created Albari\u00f1o Vento Mareiro, with its own distinctive personality and recognizable design.<\/p>\n

In the 1990s, Xos\u00e9 Ram\u00f3n Dur\u00e1n (Roque) started to become involved in the world of wine. He participated in the creation of the R\u00edas Baixas Wine Route, he was a driving force behind the foundation of the \u201cAdegas do Saln\u00e9s\u201d association in addition to being elected a member of the regulatory council, and he promoted the \u201cVintage Wine-Tasting Competition\u201d to foster a raised awareness of the tradition of aged Albari\u00f1o wines.<\/p>\n

2000 – 2015<\/h3>\n

In the year 2000, he promoted and took part in one of the first sales campaigns, using a virtual POS, under the slogan: \u201cA euro for the Galician language\u201d,<\/strong><\/em> donating \u20ac1 for each bottle that was sold during \u201cGalician literature month\u201d. During that period, agreements were reached to extend the vine plantations in Sisan, Xil and Ribadumia.<\/p>\n

It was in 2007-2008 when the Economic Interest Association (AIE) \u201cTerra de Asorei<\/a>\u201d, as the union of several family wineries, with Roque being its President. One of its objectives is to elaborate, create a brand and market its Albari\u00f1os internationally.<\/p>\n
